Charter Flights and Part-Charter Solutions

When standard scheduled services cannot accommodate your cargo due to size, weight, or urgency, MoveHaul arranges dedicated charter flights. Our charter desk works with freighter operators worldwide to secure aircraft ranging from turboprops for regional deliveries to Boeing 747 freighters for large-scale movements.

Part-charter options allow you to book a portion of an aircraft's capacity, sharing costs with other shippers on the same route. This is particularly effective for project cargo, humanitarian relief shipments, and seasonal inventory surges that exceed normal airline capacity.

We handle all aspects of charter logistics including overflight permits, ground handling coordination, customs pre-clearance at destination, and onward trucking to the final delivery address.

Air Freight FAQs

How much does air freight from Australia cost?

Air freight rates depend on the shipment's chargeable weight (the greater of actual weight or volumetric weight), origin and destination airports, commodity type, and service level. As a general guide, consolidated air freight from Sydney to major Asian hubs starts from approximately AUD $2.50 per kilogram, while express services to Europe or North America may range from AUD $5 to $12 per kilogram. We provide detailed quotes based on your specific cargo details, and there are no hidden surcharges.

What is the difference between volumetric and actual weight?

Airlines charge based on whichever is greater: the actual gross weight or the volumetric (dimensional) weight. Volumetric weight is calculated by multiplying length x width x height in centimetres and dividing by 6,000. For example, a carton measuring 60 x 40 x 40 cm has a volumetric weight of 16 kg. If the actual weight is only 10 kg, you would be charged for 16 kg. MoveHaul reviews your packing dimensions and advises on optimising packaging to reduce volumetric charges where possible.

Can you ship dangerous goods by air?

Yes. MoveHaul holds IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) certification and our staff are trained to classify, package, label, and document hazardous materials in accordance with IATA and CASA requirements. We handle all nine classes of dangerous goods, including lithium batteries, chemicals, flammable liquids, and compressed gases. Proper dangerous goods documentation is prepared in-house to avoid delays at origin or destination.

How far in advance should I book air freight?

For consolidated services, we recommend booking at least three to five business days before your required departure date. Express and next-flight-out shipments can often be arranged within 24 hours, subject to airline space availability. Charter flights typically require one to two weeks of lead time for route planning, permits, and ground handling arrangements. During peak seasons such as pre-Christmas or Chinese New Year, booking well in advance is strongly recommended as airline capacity tightens significantly.

Does MoveHaul handle customs clearance for air freight?

Yes. Our in-house customs brokerage team manages all import and export clearance for air freight shipments. This includes lodging customs entries with Australian Border Force, managing quarantine and biosecurity inspections, processing duty and GST payments, and coordinating with destination customs agents in the receiving country. Having customs and freight under one roof means faster clearance times and fewer handoff delays.
