Heavy & Project Cargo

When standard shipping cannot accommodate your cargo, MoveHaul's project logistics division takes over. From oversized mining equipment to industrial plant modules, we plan and execute complex shipments that demand specialist expertise, equipment, and coordination.

Oversized and Out-of-Gauge Shipments

Heavy and oversized cargo requires careful planning that goes far beyond a standard freight booking. MoveHaul's project cargo team begins every engagement with a detailed feasibility study, assessing dimensions, weight distribution, lifting points, and transport constraints to determine the safest and most efficient route from origin to final placement.

We coordinate flat-rack containers, open-top containers, breakbulk vessel bookings, and roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) services for cargo that cannot fit within standard container dimensions. For domestic movements, we arrange low-loader trailers, police escorts, route surveys, bridge assessments, and road permits.

Our team has successfully managed shipments including turbines, transformers, drilling rigs, pre-fabricated building modules, and heavy plant machinery weighing over 200 tonnes per piece.

End-to-End Project Management

Large-scale projects often involve multiple shipments from various origins, all needing to arrive at a single site in the correct sequence. MoveHaul assigns a dedicated project coordinator who manages the entire logistics programme — from procurement scheduling through to on-site delivery and equipment placement.

We create detailed project logistics plans that map every shipment against the construction or installation timeline. This includes vessel scheduling, port handling coordination, customs clearance through our in-house brokerage team, interim warehousing when needed, and final-mile delivery to site.

Industries we serve include mining and resources, oil and gas, power generation, civil infrastructure, and large-scale construction. Whether your project site is at a metropolitan port or a remote outback location, we have the network and experience to deliver.

Heavy Cargo FAQs

What qualifies as project or heavy cargo?

Project cargo generally refers to shipments that are too large, too heavy, or too complex to be handled through standard container freight services. This includes individual pieces exceeding standard container dimensions (6.06m long x 2.44m wide x 2.59m high for a 40ft container), items weighing more than 25 tonnes, or multi-component shipments requiring coordinated delivery to a project site. Common examples include transformers, turbines, generators, mining equipment, structural steel, pressure vessels, and prefabricated building modules.

How do you calculate costs for oversized shipments?

Project cargo pricing is bespoke and depends on numerous factors: the dimensions and weight of each piece, origin and destination locations, vessel or aircraft availability, port handling equipment required, inland transport mode and route complexity, permit and escort requirements, and insurance coverage. MoveHaul prepares detailed cost proposals after conducting a thorough assessment of your cargo specifications and logistics requirements. We provide itemised breakdowns so you understand every component of the cost. For budgeting purposes during early project stages, we can provide indicative estimates based on preliminary specifications.

Do you handle the inland transport component?

Yes. Inland transport is often the most complex phase of a heavy cargo movement. MoveHaul coordinates low-loader trailers, multi-axle hydraulic platforms, and specialised transport equipment for the road leg. We conduct route surveys to identify height, width, and weight restrictions; arrange road permits with state transport authorities; coordinate police and pilot vehicle escorts; and manage traffic control where required. For particularly challenging deliveries, we engage transport engineers to assess load distribution and plan any temporary road or bridge modifications needed to complete the journey safely.

What marine cargo insurance do you recommend for heavy-lift shipments?

We strongly recommend all-risks marine cargo insurance (Institute Cargo Clauses A) for every heavy-lift and project cargo shipment. Standard carrier liability is grossly insufficient for high-value capital equipment. We work with specialist marine insurers who understand project cargo risks and can provide cover for loading and unloading, ocean transit, inland transport, and temporary storage. For particularly high-value or complex movements, we can arrange additional coverage for delay in start-up, loss of hire, or consequential loss. Our team assists with survey requirements and claims processing if needed.

How far ahead should I engage MoveHaul for a project cargo shipment?

We recommend engaging our project team as early as possible in the procurement cycle — ideally three to six months before the first shipment is expected. Early involvement allows us to advise on packaging and preparation at origin, coordinate vessel bookings during favourable scheduling windows, apply for necessary permits and approvals, and align the logistics programme with your construction or installation timeline. For time-critical movements, we can mobilise quickly, but advance planning consistently produces better outcomes and lower costs. Contact us during the procurement phase and we will provide logistics input that supports your project planning. We can also work with your air freight requirements for urgent components that need to arrive ahead of the main cargo.
